I Thought He Had It

The other day I thought Rascal was on his way to being potty trained. For the 3rd morning he woke up and his cage was dry inside. He barked when he wanted to go out and I actually listened to him and after he ate he went to the back door and went right outside when I opened it.  Then came yesterday morning.

Since it's been so cold her we've been putting his cage in our bedroom where it's warmer.  He woke me up around 7am and I opened his cage door.  I picked up the cage to carry to the garage in case it needed to be cleaned (a morning ritual just in case) and Rascal was following me, to a point. I turned around and he was gone. I find him in the computer room standing outside his playpen and he pee'd on the vinyl that extends about 6 inches past the pen on all sides.  Yes, I was thankful he went on the vinyl and not the carpet but I really wish he'd waited and just gone outside.  Now I pick him up and let him out anyway while I check his cage.  It's wet so that means he also pee'd BEFORE he woke me up.

I fix his breakfast and let him back in to eat.  About 20 minutes after he's done eating I let him out again in case he needs to relieve himself in other ways and nothing so back inside and in his pen.  About an hour later he starts barking and when I go to take him out he's already left me a nice present.  Ever since then he barks to go out AFTER he's gone potty.  So he's got the idea that he needs to go out but he's got the order a bit reversed.
